He was ruled out as not talented enough in Hajduk Split when he was 18. Then he worked for a year as an automechanic in France when he visited a training of the local 4th division amateur team where his French wife persuaded him then to start playing again. Then on a friendly with AS Monaco a coach spotted him and then Jean Tigana also liked him and signed him on. The rest is history. He is one of the few players that scored 4 goals in a single game in Champions league. He was voted best Croatian player 2003-2005. Dado Pršo is another late bloomer.
